Even by the toxic standards of some of the freeper garbage that typically finds its way onto the pages of the Bucks County Courier Times (and the Philadelphia Inquirer with ever-greater frequency), this letter published today is truly a hoot (under the joyful heading, "If We Lose In Iraq, Thank The War Protesters And Liberals").This country is lost to the terrorists. Yes, all of those bleeding heart liberals have won, or soon will win.Apparently Jones has forgotten what started this war also, and that was Bushco's propaganda that Iraq had anything whatsoever to do with 9/11 (references to which, along with bin Laden, are strangely absent from Jones puerile, childish rant).
They will not back our president or our troops trying to kill these maniacs who are determined to kill us. Iraq has turned into a war against Islamic terrorists and Iran. Will liberals fight Iran? Not a chance!
Everyone forgets what started this war and why Bush did what he did. Sixteen worthless U.N. resolutions on Iraq, and they were still shooting at our planes in the no-fly zone. Saddam ran torture chambers, he gassed thousands of people. He invaded Kuwait, murdering people and looting the country. I didn't see any liberals protesting outside the U.N. about the slaughter of the Kurds or the Shiites in the south. I guess that's OK with liberals. We should have talked more with Saddam. After all, let's be reasonable.
This was the most brutal regime since Hitler and the Nazis, but that was OK. Let's go watch "American Idol." While these terrorists take over Iraq and have nuclear weapons and all the oil money they need, I am sure the liberals and pacifists will want to talk to them. I will start digging a hole in my back yard. Liberals have given us another Vietnam. Their protests and hand wringing caused the death (sic) of millions of people in Southeast Asia. The same thing is about to happen in the Middle East.
So, don't fight - and pay a terrible price. When the attack comes, and our economy collapses and millions of Americans die, you can thank the war protestors and liberals. If you come to my door for help, you better have a voter card in your pocket that says you're a Republican.
The Democrats want us to lose in Iraq so they can beat the GOP over the head for the next 30 years and retain control of Congress; that's what it's all about - power. By the way, the Democrats caused the debacle in Vietnam. Yes, let's keep attacking the president; it's so hip even the terrorists are glad the Democrats won.
This is no longer the country of John Wayne or George Patton.

I don't have time to refute all of Jones's lies and name calling (the "digging a hole" remark is singularly stupid), but I will only point out that John Wayne did not serve in the military (though he did apply to the Naval Academy during peacetime and was turned down).
Update 2/18: This is a consequence of Jones's wonderful Iraq war, by the way, supposedly making us safe from dark-skinned people everywhere who want to kill us (hat tip to Atrios - positively heartbreaking; thank God for journalists like Dana Priest and Anne Hull).

amen [oops, can I use that, not being a neocon, far- right member of the evangelical amerikan taliban]; doomsy's absolutely correct, smith, sr., is an ignorant fool ... the scary thing is not mostly his ignorance -we've had 6+ years to become used to that- it's the fact that he's seen fit to reproduce and we can only hope that evolution has seen fit to assist mankind by making his offspring more intelligent [given the starting point, obviously not too difficult a progression]. he conveniently ignores the fact that it was the reagan administration which provided Iraq with chemical/biological weapons and knowhow, it was king george I who called on the Iraqi shia'a to revolt and, when they did, left them hanging to await saddam's retribution, and it was king george dubya who manufactured and/or cherry-picked intel to support the war he wanted and rove ["turdblossom"]/chaney/rumsfeld/wolfowitz had been planning for years in advance, lied, changed the justification for every time the last lie was uncovered, committed troops with no plan for the aftermath, with little or no training for insurgency/civil war, put troops in harm's way with inadequate equipment ... etc., etc. ... "mission accomplished" my ass !! Not only are we sinking in the morass of "shrub's] Iraq, we are now loosing ground in Afghanistan as well. Our resident stated that the only "father" he consulted prior to attacking Iraq was his heavenly "Father" [and I thought he only spoke to the ayatollah robertson !] ... as Trudeau said the other day according to dubya, god is the only one left to blame !
The confrontational freeper tone of Smith Sr.'s literary temper tantrum wasn't what intrigued me the most - it actually was the laughable, uninformed chaos of his utter non-argument.
He should have yelled at liberals saying "we're biased" and we should "get our facts straight" - that is the inevitable precursor to a bout of non-stop name calling exposing these people for the empty vessels that they truly are.

Hmmmm. Another mindless idiot trying to rewrite history. It boggles my mind how they are clueless about the US involvement in Viet Nam which began in 1941.
His reference to watching American Idol and then lamenting the absence of John Wayne and George Patton tells me what he is watching on tv.
Does he forget that there are generals who tried to execute this war their way, the Wayne/Patton way and bush and his cabal fired them?
As for not seeing the liberals storming the UN when Saddam killed the Shia and the Kurds, hmmm...did the republicans storm the UN when bush sr. encouraged the shia to revolt then left them high and dry to be slaughered like pigs in a pen?
I still am waiting to see the neo cons storm the UN in protest of the genocide in Darfur.
