Here is last night’s Rachel Maddow feature on the exchanges between McCain and Hagel at the latter’s confirmation hearing for defense secretary – I can’t think of a word to describe how pathetic it is for any politician to still be defending the Iraq war at this point, but this is where we still are…
…and I now give you satire worthy of Stanley Kubrick from Bryan Fischer (here, in response to Louisiana Governor Bobby “Don’t Call Me Piyush” Jindal’s speech about the Republicans being the “stupid” party, which is perfectly accurate…yes, I know that Fischer is pond scum and not particularly amusing; we need to shed light on these miseries, however, to help them eventually shrivel away into dust)…
…and it’s a good thing Stephen Colbert is so damn funny; the problem is that there are some conservatives who take him seriously I’m sure (here)…
…and happy belated birthday to Phil Collins – I’ve been looking for an excuse for this tune, so I’ll take this (one of my favorite Genesis songs).

Rachel Maddow had a good commentary on this disgusting farce tonight that I hope to have here tomorrow; it’s all because of that Kenyan Muslim Socialist in the White House as far as the Repugs are concerned.
I’m tired of giving John McCain a pass because he was a POW. At this point, he’s a doddering old man who should have a hot toddy, go fall down in a corner somewhere and take a nap…
…and this should have been the lead story on every newscast in this country the day it took place; kudos to David Wheeler, and I truly grieve for his loss…

…and in these parts, we’re mourning the loss of a true boomer icon, and that would be Alleen Mae Beller of Kansas City, Missouri, otherwise known as Sally Starr; your humble narrator spent many joyful mornings in front of the TV watching her and cartoons galore, back when a parent could put a child in front of the idiot box and a surrogate parent of sorts would impart life lessons of a fashion while mom and dad were busy working or tending to household chores, and said parent didn’t have to worry about too many obnoxious promos for toys, movies, other obnoxious shows, etc. – I’m not sure it’s possible to truly measure the happiness she brought to so many lives (sorry if this sounds maudlin, but it’s the truth…what follows is a video with her novelty hit record from way back when).

…apparently it is necessary for me to provide examples to the Senate Majority “Leader” of how a real Democrat is supposed to act, so here is one…

Yep, it actually sounds reasonable to me too (and by the way, there’s no private security for the Obama daughters at their school, nor should there have to be, hopefully not ever)…
…and oh yeah, today is the 40th anniversary of Roe v. Wade – will never forget when the decision was handed down…the Catholic Standard and Times ran with pics of fetuses in jars for six months; definitely made an impression, but probably not the way they wanted - we needs LOTS and LOTS more women politicians (and how sickeningly ironic it is that people who clamor the loudest about “big gumint” support government action that is intrusive in as personal a manner as it could ever be…the last minute or so of this has some hugely important information for the “millennials”)…
…and there will likely be a few milestones to observe this year mainly as an accident of timing, and here is one; Lyndon Baines Johnson died 40 years ago today (let’s put aside the fact that he helped to escalate the Vietnam War and remember this among other highlights of his term instead, OK?)…
…and speaking of presidents, it was good to see JT at the recent inaugural bash, as noted here (and I’ll bet he didn’t even lip-sync :- ).

The NRA “leadership” is beholden to the gun industry. They’ve long since proved that they don’t give a damn about anyone or anything else, including their own membership…

…and Keene also said that terrorists don't buy guns, or something.
Again, really? And please don’t lecture me because the narrator said “fully automatic” – a semi-automatic weapon will kill you just as dead...
…and Chris Matthews has been making a lot of sense lately, and he does again here (and deep down, he knows the reason why the Repugs have gone completely around the bend, but that’s at least a five-minute commentary by itself)…
…and when I heard about this, I first felt disgust and revulsion (I also commented on it and other stuff here), but when I heard this tune later today while filling up the Doomsymobile, I thought that the title was perfect to sum up how I feel about it (and concerning the NRA and the Repugs overall I suppose).

It looks like Phil Gingrey made an ass of himself again, as noted here (more Gingrey lowlights are here).
Seriously, are there any adults in the Republican Party who can put an end to this awfulness, at long last (talking about rape, I mean)? Please let me know (by the way, good on Gingrey for this if he really means it)…
…and I would say that Rachel Maddow has turned over a rather interesting rock concerning an Alaskan oil rig set up by Shell and that company’s efforts to move it in really, really bad weather (kudos to Ed Markey of Massachusetts…um, doesn’t Alaska allegedly have a Dem U.S. Senator who could say a thing or two about this also? Paging Mark Begich)…
…and Jon Stewart does it again, bringing it to Fix Noise big time over their criticism of the Current TV sale to Al Jazeera America (which, dare I hope, could get this guy on the air once more at long last where he belongs)…
…and I know I’m behind on the indie/contemporary videos, and I’ll get back to them I promise, but for now, happy belated birthday to this guy, who could probably go by his real name now if he wanted to.

We saw “Lincoln” and thought it was terrific…Daniel Day-Lewis should win the Best Actor Oscar, and Tommy Lee Jones was great also – we’ll see (and I don’t know anything about this Patricia Murphy person, but I’m not sure how she expects Obama to more or less win over the other side by doing anything he hasn’t already done; to me, that’s Beltway-media-speak for “shut up and let the Repugs take charge”)…
…and it looks like “Big Gay” has won again based on this (way too funny; I’m sure Big Gay Al is happy – removing my tongue from my cheek)…
…and happy birthday to Shawn Colvin…

There’s been so much focus by our corporate media on how much Chuck Hagel supposedly loves Israel or not that there hasn’t been nearly as much scrutiny over this guy (from here)…
…and when it comes to deceit, I suppose it’s a bit of a logical transition to turn to Richard Nixon, who would have been 100 today; of course, Tricky Dick, not being a movement conservative, didn’t merit anything approximating the full-on Reaganalia of February 2011 – here is one of many stellar (?) Nixon moments once more for your viewing pleasure (he spoke these words in November 1973, and by August next year, he was gone)…
…and I always thought this was a catchy little number about “the wit from Whittier” (featuring this guy)…
…and this may be Nixon’s most remembered moment in contemporary music, brilliantly crafted by Neil Young.

Forget about the damn fiscal cliff – try paying attention to a real disaster (here)…
...and God bless Gabby Giffords and her husband for their efforts to try and bring sanity to what passes for the gun debate in this country (and by the way, though I give Steve Schmidt some credit, I have never viewed my gun position as "extreme")...
...and yes, Jon Stewart is funny here as always about the Repugs and their utter fail on the vote for the victims of Sandy, but he also brings more than a little bit of disgust too, rightly so (here, and is this a surprise?)...
…and I’m going to combine this story with the fact that, 50 years ago today, the price of a first-class stamp shot through the roof from a ghastly 4 cents all the way to a nickel…good times.

We don’t need to “take a look at what happened at Sandy Hook,” Sen. Heitkamp. We already know what happened (here).
A 20-year-old lunatic with a semi-automatic assault rifle broke into an elementary school and murdered 20 children and 6 teachers before he killed himself.
Have fun depositing what I’m sure will be a hefty check from the National Rifle Association for shamelessly propagating their talking points (and Democrats wonder why voters in this country get disgusted with them)…
…and Rachel Maddow explains a reason why voting in state elections (or any election) matters, in this case pertaining to the minimum wage (and this is what she was referring to in Virginia – typical right-wing crap)…
…and one of the items I noted here was the fact that the NHL and the players union are near an agreement to end the lockout that got rid of over half the season – philly.com took the opportunity to fellate in print Ed Snider himself, celebrating his 80th birthday (what timing); here is an utterly inglorious (but unintentionally funny) moment brought to us by Snider (not counting his fundraising for Number 43’s carnage in Iraq)…

Good call by Al Sharpton on this one – I’m sure an apology won’t be forthcoming, but it’s certainly overdue…
…and I, for one, apologize for wasting everyone’s time with Falafel Man, but hey, he’s the one who keeps saying this garbage, not me, so (and nice stuff from George “Sulu” Takei also, telling the truth I mean)…
…and it looks like “Mr. Puppy Dog Eyes With The Shiv” is at it again, finding a typical Repug inside-out feeble pretext to try and blame Obama for the incompetence (to say nothing of hard-heartedness) of Ryan’s own party – I predict that the residents whose lives were turned upside down by Sandy will receive a fraction of the funds they need because of these monsters in the House, and I’d definitely love to be wrong…
…and I continue to be impressed by Rep. Keith Ellison of Minnesota – more good stuff here (and I know about Current being purchased by Al Jazeera America; hate to break the news, but A-J is actually doing reporting on how everyday people in this country are being affected by what our government as a whole is doing in pursuit of class warfare; in particular, they actually interviewed some of the “Occupy” protestors instead of merely demonizing them, as the news networks with initials for names did)…

Of course, Joe Scar shills for the utterly horrid Chris Smith, and I already commented on Peter King, but Scarborough is right about Frank LoBiondo – when I used to keep track of the congressional votes (can’t do that anymore either – sigh), LoBiondo’s votes were pretty much in the middle of the proverbial road all the time, which isn’t easy…even if Orange Man comes through with a vote and the funds are approved, it definitely won’t be enough – and yes, Christie and King are right, but this mess has the Teahadist imprimatur all over it, and even they don’t have the intestinal fortitude to call out the racist-sign-and-funny-hat crowd – one more thing: it’s truly shocking to see Jim Cramer, of all people, as the voice of reason – the clip is basically over at 10:30 (here)…
