Turning to the videos, Rachel Maddow brings us a whole bunch of stuff, including the antics of Teahadist Texas Senator Ted Cruz (a bit of a spawn of Limbore, I suppose); we used to refer to Joseph McCarthy as more or less of an abstraction in our politics given the passage of time. But now, we’re talking literally again – pathetic (I actually would have liked to see a bit harder of an edge here...after all, people's careers were ruined over this stuff...hell, people died over this stuff)…
…and thanks to a U.S. Congress with a whole bunch of Teahadist nematodes like Cruz, we have to deal with this…
…turning to a decidedly more upbeat topic, this tells us of the latest entrants to the Songwriters Hall of Fame; nothing against Aerosmith or Foreigner, but those guys still get tons of airplay – allow me the opportunity to salute fellow entrant Tony Hatch, who brought us many great tunes particularly with Petula Clark, including this one (a bit timely for the weekend – yeah, I know, real “Carnaby Street”)…
…and RIP Magic Slim (and I’m sure Fred and Ginger wouldn’t mind a bit).

…and as I said last night, there was nothing supposedly spontaneous, or anything even close to that, about the Teahadists (and as those smarter than I have pointed out, it was nothing but an attempt at rebranding the Repug Party to try and get rid of the stench from Dubya anyway)…
…and I’m a little behind on the news cycle on this from Monday, but I wanted to make sure I didn’t miss it…

…and before anyone decides to shed a tear for departing U.S. Senate Repug Mike Johanns (here), remember that he probably had more to do with killing ACORN than anyone else (here), sponsoring those amendments that turned out to be unconstitutional (here)…Johanns is also attached to this bit of political cowardice, which we are reminded of once more by that Murphy fellow…
…and I watched just about all of Rachel Maddow’s excellent documentary tonight on the run-up to the Iraq war (here); she ended up recounting a lot of stuff many of us already knew, but she nevertheless performed a great service – watching Doug Feith now utterly copping out was one of the many repugnant moments, with Feith being one of the biggest fabricators…I kind of wish a bit more of a withering eye had been cast at Judith Miller and Michael Gordon of the New York Times, though.

I don’t know how many other people besides your humble narrator were aware of this, but last Wednesday would have been the 102nd birthday of The Sainted Ronnie R.How many other people, I mean, besides PA’s Governor Tom (“Space Cadet”) Corbett, who was one of 40 Repug governors signing a declaration here proclaiming February 6th as “Ronald Reagan Day.”
Which made me recall this speech that Number 40 once gave in PA, in which he said the following…
Our tax cuts in 1981 lifted our economy out of—you've heard the word back then-"malaise" and into an almost 2 1/2 years of growth. If those tax cuts could take a sick economy suffering from runaway inflation, skyrocketing interest rates, declining investments, sinking morale, and slumping initiative and turn it into the strongest, most dynamic and innovative economy in the world, think what America's tax plan can do today. We can build success on top of success. We can ignite the second stage of our booster rockets and blast this economy to new heights of achievement. We can do it, and we will do it.Utterly (and typically) ridiculous hyperbole aside (also on display from Reagan here), the following should be recalled about President Jimmy Carter’s “malaise” speech from here (basically, after he gave it, his approval rating rose 11 points – and of course, he never even actually said the word “malaise” in the speech).
Also, Reagan typically talked about how supposedly great his tax cuts were. Well, he gave the speech from which I provided the excerpt in May 1985. And as noted here, by then, he had raised taxes in 1982, 1983 and 1984, and would do so again in 1986 and 1987.
So that makes him at the very least “The Great Obfuscator” based on the excerpt (you could also argue that that makes him a goddamned liar, but I’ll leave that judgment to history).
Anyway, here is my point (at last)…as bad as Reagan was, he looks like FDR in comparison to the yokels in his party now, including Rand Paul in the U.S. Senate, who apparently has no trouble with our economy defaulting based on this.
Well, Reagan, for his myriad faults, actually had some words of wisdom on that subject…
…and I pointed out yesterday that Karl Rove is pitching a fit over the prospect of Steve King running for the Iowa U.S. Senate seat that will be vacated by Dem Tom Harkin.
Well, while you’re trying to wrap your head around that as they say, try this on for size: Al Franken versus Moon Unit Bachmann in Minnesota (here).

I’m tired of giving John McCain a pass because he was a POW. At this point, he’s a doddering old man who should have a hot toddy, go fall down in a corner somewhere and take a nap…
…and this should have been the lead story on every newscast in this country the day it took place; kudos to David Wheeler, and I truly grieve for his loss…
…and RIP the Obama “jobs” council, much ado about not a hell of a lot (here) – not totally his fault, though; Heaven forbid that the “pay no price, bear no burden” bunch have to endure any hardship at all to finance actual jobs legislation…
…and I don’t think there’s such a thing as a bad time to hear this song.

John Fugelsang and Stephanie Miller of Current TV provide probably the best analysis I’ve heard to date on the exchange between Secretary of State John Kerry and Teahadist Ron Johnson during Kerry’s confirmation hearing - yep, the Repugs just love allegedly bogus intel, unless they own it of course, which they usually do…
…and speaking of Kerry, he also schooled that numbskull John Barrasso with the latter’s ridiculously leading question on clean energy (here – these words should be heard by every…person…in…this…nation)…
…and leave it to Martin Bashir to provide some reality-based commentary on the fact that Congress has FINALLY approved relief for Hurricane Sandy (ably assisted by Dem rep Joe Crowley)…
…and in these parts, we’re mourning the loss of a true boomer icon, and that would be Alleen Mae Beller of Kansas City, Missouri, otherwise known as Sally Starr; your humble narrator spent many joyful mornings in front of the TV watching her and cartoons galore, back when a parent could put a child in front of the idiot box and a surrogate parent of sorts would impart life lessons of a fashion while mom and dad were busy working or tending to household chores, and said parent didn’t have to worry about too many obnoxious promos for toys, movies, other obnoxious shows, etc. – I’m not sure it’s possible to truly measure the happiness she brought to so many lives (sorry if this sounds maudlin, but it’s the truth…what follows is a video with her novelty hit record from way back when).

Oh trust me, Ed, we are – once again, Harry Reid brings a knife to the proverbial gun fight; what bleeping good does it do to respect the process when the process is broken (interesting speculation on the potential assault weapons vote – dunno; my suspicion is that that fear is a bit overwrought, but maybe not)…
…apparently it is necessary for me to provide examples to the Senate Majority “Leader” of how a real Democrat is supposed to act, so here is one…

Yep, it actually sounds reasonable to me too (and by the way, there’s no private security for the Obama daughters at their school, nor should there have to be, hopefully not ever)…
…and oh yeah, today is the 40th anniversary of Roe v. Wade – will never forget when the decision was handed down…the Catholic Standard and Times ran with pics of fetuses in jars for six months; definitely made an impression, but probably not the way they wanted - we needs LOTS and LOTS more women politicians (and how sickeningly ironic it is that people who clamor the loudest about “big gumint” support government action that is intrusive in as personal a manner as it could ever be…the last minute or so of this has some hugely important information for the “millennials”)…
…and there will likely be a few milestones to observe this year mainly as an accident of timing, and here is one; Lyndon Baines Johnson died 40 years ago today (let’s put aside the fact that he helped to escalate the Vietnam War and remember this among other highlights of his term instead, OK?)…
…and speaking of presidents, it was good to see JT at the recent inaugural bash, as noted here (and I’ll bet he didn’t even lip-sync :- ).

…and Stephen Colbert does it again (yeah, I'm sure those third graders are writing their letters to Obama telling him to restructure our debt - what a maroon)…
…and Janis Joplin would have been 70 today.

I don’t know if anybody else besides me noticed, but today would have been the 100th birthday of Danny Kaye (a wonderful clip from this pic)...
...and oh yeah, anybody remember our combat veterans in Iraq and Afghanistan – show of hands?...
...and I love the way Jon Stewart starts his commentary by making fun of this – so bizarre as to be utterly beyond any description from yours truly (and I guess “tyrannical overreach” is all in the eye of the beholder)...

…and speaking of lousy Democrats, I think it’s time once more to revisit this clip on “Bush Dog” Jim Cooper, given the fact that he was the ONLY DEMOCRAT who voted against relief for victims of Hurricane Sandy (here); here he is opposing the public option about three years ago (and how prophetic was Dr. Dean here about the Democrats losing their gains in Congress if they didn’t get stuff done that most of this country wanted?)…
